Virulence is a fully open access peer-reviewed journal. All articles will (if accepted) be available for anyone to read anywhere, at any time immediately on publication.Virulence is the first international peer-reviewed journal of its kind to focus exclusively on microbial pathogenicity, the infection process and host-pathogen interactions. To address the new infectious challenges, emerging infectious agents and antimicrobial resistance, there is a clear need for interdisciplinary research.Topics of interest to Virulence include:Microbial pathogenicity–viruses (including HIV), bacteria, fungi, and parasitesMolecular and biological function of established and novel virulence factorsIdentification, development and study of antimicrobial agentsHIV/AIDSHost-pathogen and pathogen-pathogen interactionsHost response to infection and immune responses to inhibitors, toxins, and other virulence factorsMammalian, other vertebrate as well as invertebrate model organisms and hostsClinical trials evaluating all aspects of the infection processMicrobiomeResearch on bio-terrorism agentsVaccine development and evaluationDiagnosis of infectious diseasesInfections in resource-limited settingsVirulence publishes four general types of papers: Original ResearchReviews (both narrative and systematic)ProtocolsPerpectivesVirulence brings together scientists and clinical researchers working on the 'pathogen,' the 'host' or the 'antimicrobial agents.'
